Mountains of Goals…

It’s another new year and in true ‘Me’ style, I’ve created as significant List… clearly I haven’t learnt!

I created the list, towards the end of last year, when I got rather frustrated with things in my life. Things that were causing mental stress and clutter. Yet, I still did little about it. I’ve discovered, I’m a procrastinator.

Procrastination has resulted in dishes not being washed.
Procrastination has resulted in the house building clutter.
Procrastination has resulted in us losing money as I’ve missed insurance claims deadlines.
Procrastination has resulted in me feeling like I’m constantly chasing my tail.

So I created a list of projects, of tasks that were causing me significant mental clutter.
From submitting the insurance claims that were still in date, to organising my paperwork, to creating ‘Memory pages’
They were to be called projects until a visit to the U.K….

A friend has given herself the challenge of a ‘Medal a Month’, where each month she plans to enter a race and earn a medal. I thought it was a great idea, but with my PF, I know that I cannot run or should I say contemplate running just yet.
But I could hike! And so the idea of ‘A Mountain a Month’ challenge was born.

Except that it grew to becoming a bit more than just one mountain:
: There is the actual physical mountain that I will hike up each month, with Mt Fuji being my ultimate goal in July.
: The mountain of weight ( 15kg), that I’ve gained since becoming an expat.
: The mountain of paperwork that only gets done when I have a deadline!
: The mountain of photographs I have on my hard drive.
: The mountain of incomplete creative projects that are cluttering our home.
: The mountain of books that are gathering dust on my bookshelf waiting for me to read.

And so, in 2017 I plan to conquer mountains! At least two a month- an actual mountain and one of my incomplete projects!

Fingers crossed!

PS- I plan to keep you posted on how I’m doing, in the hope the accountability will help drive the momentum.

Creating Order- Day 17 of a 20 day challenge

Creating Order PSD copyI have given myself the challenge of trying to create more order in my life. There are areas where I manage well and others where I fail dismally and cause me stress. I would love nothing more, than to have routines and habits that enable life to just flow better. I am hoping that by posting everyday the various areas that need I feel improvement, that it will keep me accountable and I will achieve my to do list for once in my life.

Tuesdays theme is tasks, and today I am supposed to be tackling my Christmas cards. When I sit down to do my Christmas cards I have an 8 Step process.

  1. Retrieve the bag for Christmas cards from the cupboard.
  2. Update the addresses if needs be.
  3. Remove the addresses of people who I haven’t received a Christmas card from for a few years. (Though if they’re elderly, I keep them on as it might be that they are not able to send, but would definitely enjoy receiving.)
  4. Write our newsletter.
  5. Print off the newsletter and get all the family members to sign them.
  6. Print off the address labels.
  7. Write out the cards.
  8. Post.

Yes- time consuming. Step 3 has reduced the numbers on the mailing list, and I’ve started to email the newsletter to people which at least saves on paper and ink.

To be honest though, I haven’t started even step 1, my Christmas cards list yet.  At one stage I thought I might leave it this year, and then I received an email from a lady on our list, who was sending us her updated news and mentioned how much she enjoys reading our annual newsletter. Ok. Guess I’m doing it this year.

But not today.

I have adjusted my original plan of what I am covering in these challenges, as I have gone through the weeks and found the need.

Tomorrow’s Biggie is Tackling the Home Office and make it a peaceful haven to work and think. One of the tasks to achieve that and is to remove the paper clutter that is cluttering the office and my mind.

Today I am going to tackle my Scouting clutter. I have one more meeting this term and it is planned and all materials needed purchased. But the paperwork is behind and my training has been shelved the last few weeks. So today I am going to tackle my scouting stuff- update the paperwork, order badges I need and tackle the training.
Here’s to order and organisation.

Today I had planned to tidy our photo storage system, but that is chaos that I can’t see and you know how the saying goes- “Outta sight, outta mind.” Our home office on the other hand is is still in chaos. Organised chaos- I have a box of filing, a box of medical claims, and three boxes of children’s artwork (I did manage step one last week!)

I have arranged with a friend to go Christmas shopping, something that needs to be done so “A” can take them over to the UK, when he’s there on business later.

So today’s challenges:

  1. Complete purchases for Cubs and Beavers Shoebox appeal.
  2. Complete UK Christmas purchases.
  3. Order UK stuff for “A” to bring back for us.
  4. Choose a box in office and ‘Just Do It’

Wednesday….

The Biggie- Part 2 ….Children’s Artwork.

Our home office is still a huge mess, but I am getting some order- even if it’s only in my mind for now!

I am starting to make progress in the various admin tasks that I need to do- but it all takes time.

But I will do it!

Realistically, I’m not sure how much I’m going to get done today, as my To Do List for today is already rather large. Nonetheless- I want to do it, so I’m splitting it up into a … step process.

1: Divide and conquer

The children’s artwork/ schoolwork is all sitting in a pile in the passage to the office. I’ve bought up 3 plastic boxes from our store room, one for each child. I will sort the work into the correct box.

2: Create a digital storage system.

Each child has a school folder and in here I’ve divided it into the years- Nursery, Reception, Year 1 etc. So far, I’ve been putting their photographs from the school (first day, school pictures, sports days, assemblies etc) into that folder. I am now planning to add a schoolwork folder for each year group.

3: Sort and Scan

Go through the box of schoolwork and choose the best, scan them and store them.

4: Upload onto a digital album

I’m planning to upload the scanned images onto PhotoBox and then create a photobook of the children’s time at school. I am thinking that I will create a book for each phase of schooling- with high school possibly only having one. (I don’t believe there will be too many photographs and examples of work from high school.)

5: Repeat Steps 2-4 for the next child:

Perserverance is key…. Perserverance is key…..Perserverance is key…..Perserverance is key!

6: Pick a date at the end of the next academic year:

Choose a day in the future by when you have completed steps 1-5 for the recently completed academic school year. I haven’t decided yet whether I want to do mine over the summer break, or when mine are back at school in September.

If all of this seems to be too much, why not outsource it?

My friend has turned her hobby of creating photo books, into a business. She will happily take on this overwhelming task for you. Have a look at her website.

I’m off now to tackle Step 1. Wish me luck!

Creating Order- Day 3 How have I done?

Creating Order PSD copyI have given myself the challenge of trying to create more order in my life. There are areas where I manage well and others where I fail dismally and cause me stress. I would love nothing more, than to have routines and habits that enable life to just flow better. I am hoping that by posting everyday the various areas that need I feel improvement, that it will keep me accountable and I will achieve my to do list for once in my life.

Today has been very enlightening. Again, I didn’t manage everything on my To Do List, but I made significant in roads to the mountain of paperwork. It’s also spread out of the office and onto the dining room table…

Preparing to start

The biggest light bulb moment regarding the challenge was the discovery that my paperwork isn’t Mount Everest, but more like Fuji. Still a mountain to climb, but one that will take hours to climb rather than days.

I also had a light bulb moment regarding planning, but I will share that with you later this month.

Today’s challenge tasks:
: Order photographs from a family sitting we had in March. (Eek!)

I emailed the photographer, to see whether we could still order the pictures. I’ve not heard back yet, but I have drafted the email of which ones we would like, should he respond to the positive.

: Send off at least 75% of medical claims.

This is the paperwork that has crept into the dining room. Each claim has its own spot. Still in the middle of downloading the claim forms needed….

: Update Cubs training plan.

My Cubs to do list has grown a fair bit today, so am allocating tomorrow to sorting it out. At least this time it’s not the weekend!

: Spend 20 minutes tidying the office.

What do you think?

Before….

And after.

Visually not much different, but mentally I think it is.

So it looks like this challenge is proving too much for me. But it has been very enlightening, and I am learning lots. So I am going to continue, because even if I only achieve 40%, 40%of something is better than 40% of nothing.

Creating Order- Day 3 of a 20 day challenge

Wednesday….

The Biggie….Paperwork.

Our home office is truly in the mess that the title image shows. (Cringe!) I have emails desperately needing replies, I’m behind on my Cubs training and way overdue sitting down and sorting our health insurance claims.

So today I’m keeping the blog short and sweet, so I can tackle the challenge.

Today’s challenge tasks:

  • Order photographs from a family sitting we had in March. (Eek!)
  • Send off at least 75% of medical claims.
  • Update Cubs training plan.
  • Spend 20 minutes tidying the office.

That’s the minimum I would like to do. If I manage all of those then I would like to:

  • Send off the remaining medical forms.
  • Clear all clutter from the office.

The home office is my biggest challenge and the very thing that got me going on this whole November challenge. Ultimately by the end of this month, I would love to have the office, tidy, organised, nicely decorated AND all the boxes of paper work, up to date and done.
We can but dream…
